Yoga for Menopause

Menopause is a part of every woman's life. It is the stage when your menstrual period permanently stops. This stage usually occurs between the age of 40 and 60 associated with hormonal, physical and psychological changes. These changes can occur gradually or abruptly. It can start as early as the age of 30 and last until as late as the age of 60. It can also occur when the ovaries are removed or stopped functioning. Menopause is not an illness but a natural biological process, though the risk for Heart Disease and Osteoporosis rises after Menopause. Estrogen and progesterone level plays the biggest part in Menopause. In this stage, the ovaries make less estrogen and progesterone. the parts of the body that depends on estrogen to keep them healthy will react and this often causes the discomfort in some Women. Menopause is divided into two stages: the Premenopause and Postmenopause. Premenopause is the time when you begin to experience the signs and symptoms though you are still ovulating. Your experience uneven rising and falling of your hormone level that often cause you to feel hot flashes and variations in your periods. Postmenopausal stage is when you are about 12 months past your last period and your ovaries no longer produce estrogen and progesterone, nor release eggs.


Estrogen is the female hormone that plays a major role in shaping your body and in preparing it for Pregnancy. When the body produces less of these hormones, Symptoms include irregular menstruation, changes in sexual desire, hot flashes, vaginal dryness and urinary problems, changes in appearance, mood changes, sleep disturbances, palpitations and backaches. Not all women experience these symptoms, some are not even aware of any other changes in their body.

Some suggestions

  1. Many women have found that naturopathic combination of medicinal herbs have been helpful.
  2. Visit a naturopath or homoeopath to discuss your particular case.
  3. Loss of bone density due to loss of oestrogen means you need to increase your calcium intake.
  4. Eat calcium rich food such as cabbage, sesame seed, broccoli, brussel sprouts, tahini etc
  5. Maintain healthy bones by regular weight bearing exercise eg. walking and standing yoga asanas.
  6. Take up some sort of artistic expression such as gardening, drawing, dancing. painting. singing.
  7. Creative expression may correct the temporary imbalance you feel during menopause
  8. For fluid retention cut out salt, junk food, sugar, caffeine.
  9. Accept this time in your life as a new beginning for a wiser, more mature you.

Headache Excitement Worries Loss of concentration Gloom Pain in joints Dryness of the skin As the body adapts to the changing levels of natural hormones, vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and palpitations, psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, irritability, mood swings and lack of concentration, and atrophic symptoms such as vaginal dryness and urgency of urination appear.

Premature menopause

Premature menopause (or premature ovarian failure) is defined as menopause occurring before the age of 40; it occurs in 1% of women. some women enter menopause at a younger age, especially if they have had cancer or another serious illness and undergone chemotherapy. Other causes of premature menopause include autoimmune disorders, thyroid disease, and diabetes mellitus. Premature menopause is diagnosed by measuring the levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH); the levels of these hormones will be higher if menopause has occurred. Rates of premature menopause have been found to be significantly higher in fraternal and identical twins; approximately 5% of twins reach menopause before the age of 40. The reasons for this are not completely understood. Transplants of ovarian tissue between identical twins have been successful in restoring fertility.

Diet for Menopause

Fresh fruits and vegetables. Milk --- maintain the level of calcium in the body. Drink lot of water that will stabilize the effects caused by the liquid discharge out of the glands. Reduce the intake of salt in food. know more about Diet. Obviously following measures gives relief, such as drinking cold liquids and removing excess clothing layers when hot flashes strike, and avoiding hot flash triggers such as spicy foods, may supplement or supplant the use of medications/ treatment for some women. Botanical (herbs/ herbal) and other dietary supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, affecting how the body reacts.
