Westerwald The Westerwald lies mostly southwest of the three-state common point shared by Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia in the districts of Altenkirchen, Lahn-Dill, Limburg-Weilburg, Neuwied, Rhein-Lahn, Rhein-Sieg, Westerwaldkreis and partly in Siegen-Wittgenstein. It is found south of the Rothaargebirge, southwest of the Lahn-Dill-Bergland (another low mountain range), north of the Taunus and east of the Middle Rhine and stretches more or less southwards from Siegen and Burbach, southwestwards from Haiger, northwestwards from Weilburg, northwards from Limburg an der Lahn, northeastwards from Koblenz, eastwards from Linz am Rhein, southeastwards from Wissen and southwards from Betzdorf. In its centre lie Bad Marienberg and Hachenburg.
Clockwise, the Westerwald is bordered by the following rivers’

valleys: the Rhine between Koblenz and Linz, the Sieg as far as Betzdorf, the Heller, the Dill and from its mouth near Wetzlar, the Lahn up to Lahnstein.
Geomorphologically, the Westerwald belongs to the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (Rhenish Slate Mountains), forming the greater part of that range’s eastern half on the Rhine’s right bank. Likewise, the Gladenbacher Bergland, lying east of the Dill, also belongs to the Westerwald, whereas the mountains reaching up to 680 m near the Haiger Saddle (Haiger Sattel) and east of Siegen are counted as part of the Rothaargebirge.
Places
istrict seats in the Westerwald are: Altenkirchen (Altenkirchen district), Montabaur (Westerwaldkreis) and Neuwied (Neuwied district). Furthermore, the Lahn-Dill-Kreis, the Mayen-Koblenz district, the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis and the Limburg-Weilburg district each have shares of the Westerwald. If Sieg is taken as the Westerwald’s northernmost limit, then the Rhein-Sieg district likewise belongs here, at least in parts.
Westerwald Pottery
Westerwald Pottery is the brain child of Phil Schaltenbrand, author, historian, professor, and potter extraordinaire. Schaltenbrand's pottery studios, located forty-five miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania along historic Route 40, are visited annually by thousands from across America and around the world who come to watch pottery being made the "old fashioned way." Phil's firm commitment to the revival of an ancient art form has been the driving force behind Westerwald Pottery, since 1975 when the company was formed. Westerwald Pottery was the first to offer personalized stoneware, the first to use authentic cobalt brush decoration, and the first to sign, stamp, and date each piece in the line. While not the largest producer of hand-made pottery in the U.S.A., Westerwald Pottery has consistently maintained the highest standards of excellence.

WesterwaldKannenbäckerland regions
| The Westerwald is a highland region between Frankfurt and Cologne, bordered by the Lahn, Sieg, Rhine and Dill rivers. This is a verdant walkers' paradise with wave after wave of forested peaks, as far as the eye can see. Farming, and the mining of iron ore, slate, basalt and clay, have helped to shape the Westerwald over the centuries. Although you sometimes can't see the water for all the trees, it is also a paradise for water babies of all ages. In the south of the Westerwald region, close to Hachenburg, is the Westerwald Lakes area, consisting of seven lakes surrounded by deciduous and coniferous forests, meadows and fields offering fun and activities for the whole family.

Canoeing and rafting tours are very popular here. Every October, each of the lakes is drained. The fishing that takes place at this time gives cause for great celebrations by locals and visitors alikeTowards the end of the year, when the lakes freeze over, they provide a great temporary ice rink for skaters.
