Social Theory Research

This course explores recent attempts at theorising the social world, introducing students to contemporary social theory through an examination of topics central to social research and the nature of modern societies. A select range of social theorists will be chosen, based on departmental expertise and interest, to illuminate key aspects of the discipline as it wrestles with conceptual and diagnostic concerns. These include epistemological issues concerning whether a science of society is possible, how increasingly complex societies require new ways of theorizing communication and social systems and to what extent concepts like distinction, ambivalence, simulation and flow shed light on the nature of fast-paced, globalized, media-saturated societies like ours.

Mode of delivery

The course will be based on a weekly, two-hour session led by a member of the course team. The precise organisation of the session will vary according to the topic but may include lectures, small group work, focused readings or discussions.
